What is Power?

What Is Power? For the purpose of this paper, power is in a person or thing that possesses or exercises authority or influence. Power can be expressed in many ways.

One attribute that a leader must have is to be powerful. If he is not powerful, is unlikely that anyone will listen to him. Now, power doesn’t mean that that person must be mean and strict and not listen to anyone’s ideas and be corrupt and. Being powerful just means being able to be firm, and having the ability to make a difference and having people listen to you. A good powerful leader focuses on education and fixing poverty, not planning wars and attacks. For example, in December 1989, Boris Yeltsin and Bill Clinton declared the Cold War to be officially over at a summit meeting in Malta.

Unfortunately, most of the leaders in the history we have learnt about this year, don’t display these characteristics. A trait that good leaders shouldn’t exhibit is making rules that benefit themselves. For example, Adolf Hitler, the German leader didn’t display these. He had lots of power, just the wrong ideas. He gained power for himself and used is irrationally. For example, the holocaust; it systematically killed up to ten million Jews, Gypsies, homosexuals, communists, and other non- Aryan people. He was a racist leader, because he wanted to kill all Jews. Another example is in the book, Animal Farm. Napoleon, he made rules that only benefitted the pigs. All the rest of the animals were treated like dirt. Another way to say this is that he didn’t care about the other animals, and what happened to them. A powerful leader must take into consideration what everybody needs and wants.

A lot of power can lead to control. An example of power that turned into control is in the Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins. The capitol has all the power, and basically controls all twelve districts. When the names are drawn for the games, the capitol has all control over them. They don’t have a say in what they wear, eat, or even talk!

As you can see, power is a characteristic that many people have, but don't use wisely. It can be used to control, or benefit some people. Power gives people the ability to make and enforce rules and make people obey them. Overall, power should be used wisely, otherwise it can be abused, as you can see .

The Hunger Games: Power or Control

In the book, The Hunger Games, the most prominent theme is control. There are many examples of control in this book. Firstly, I think control starts on the first page of chapter 3, page 34. This is because once Katniss and Peeta have entered the Hunger Games, they have no control over themselves. They can't control what they're going to wear to the interview or parade, they can't decide for themselves about what to say at the interview. Also, the theme control is shown at the end of the games when only Katniss, Peeta and Cato are left. The gamemakers control the arena, and made hungry, angry mutts come and tear Cato apart. The gamemakers also are in control the whole time, deciding the temperature, the location and everything that goes on in the games. Lastly, I think Haymitch also has a big role in the theme of control because he decides when and what to give the players, Katniss and Peeta. Basically, every gift sponsored by the viewers goes through him. He can decide if they live or not with the power he has. All these reasons contribute to why I think control is the main theme in the novel.

According to the World Bank, "Globalization is the growing integration of economies and societies around the world," Globalization has both pros and cons to it. Firstly, with globalization, many new jobs were available to those who they weren't available to before. Also, globalization brings countries closer together, because they have something in common. In addition, globalization helps start up some countries' economy. To add to that, globalization brings many new products around the world and helps trade. For example, However, globalization also has some bad things about it as well. To start off with, globalization changes many countries' culture. For example, India. India is becoming more and more western that some of its' culture and religion is becoming forgotten.

During the process of working on the Population Project, I learnt many valuable lessons that will help me in the future. Here are just 3 of them.

1) Time Management- this is extremely important because when you have assignments you can't let them pile up, so you need to manage you time so you can do your things at the right time.
2) Ask questions- It is really important to ask questions when you don't understand, or you just want to clarify. It's better to get straight by asking a question, than not asking a question and get a bad grade on it.
3) When writing, make sure it makes sense, and always give supporting evidence.

Vonnegut and Technology

According to Vonnegut, author of Welcome to the Monkey House, technology is newfangled contraptions. Contraptions like nuclear submarines armed with Poseidon missiles that have H-bombs in their warheads, and like computers that cheat you out of becoming.

Bill Gates says, “Wait till you can see what your computer can become.” But it’s you who should be doing the becoming. What you can become is the miracle you were born to work—not the damn fool computer.”

I think that this statement is partly true. True, because I think that technology is bad when it is involved in the making of nuclear bombs and weapons. However, technology is very useful and entertaining; especially when doing homework, computers come in handy, and when you're on a long car drive, iPods definitely are useful.

However, I agree with Vonnegut that we should become, and not our technology.

In third quarter my goals were:

Doing my homework the day it is assigned
Read every day for 15 minutes
Put more detail into my writing and more effort into my projects.

I think that I did do my homework the day it was assigned which made it easier to keep up. I did read for 15 minutes every night. I think that I did put a lot of detail into my writing and projects especially the 43rd War Journal.

Oxymoron: Holy War

The phrase "Holy War' is an oxymoron because holy is the opposite of war. The definition of holy according to dictionary.com is specially recognized as or declared sacred by religious use or authority, and the definition for war is a conflict carried on by force of arms, as between nations or between parties within a nation. They are different because holy is related with religion, and war is related with conflict. They both don't go together. Many conflicts in the world today are based upon religious differences, yet all major world religions condemn killing. This is because most religions want others to join their religion, so they think that war is an exception.

WWIII: Will It Happen?

I believe that there will not be a World War Three, for different reasons.
Firstly, countries are more sophisticated and informed and intelligent. They know that fighting is not a way to solve problems, and that there are better solutions to disagree with others. And even if there are people who don't think this, I think the majority does, so they will convince the others.

Also, there are many "peace" organizations, and many people have joined them, and there is even a peace day. School all over the world celebrate it, and are pro peace.
This is why I don't think there will be a world war III.

How are you? How are our children, George and Marianne? Has Marianne recovered from her cold you told me about in your last letter? Make sure to buy medicines for her, I will send you some money soon. I would hate to have another one of our children pass away, like what happened to Margaret. Things are fine here… I don’t want you to worry about me. I hope to be home soon.

Good News… We have successfully attacked Poland a couple of weeks ago! On the 1st of September, we marched into Poland and fought. We attacked Poland from 3 fronts. East Prussia (north), Germany (west), and Slovakia (south). There were 2 million men, most on horseback, but easy to defeat against with our tanks. In the beginning, we launched our blitzkrieg, which we hadn’t used for 3 years, since the Spanish Civil War!! It was scary, at first, but I fought for the pride of my country. Times are tough here, though. We barely have enough food to feed all the men, but we’re surviving. It was dusty and black, smoky, you couldn’t even breathe or see a thing. But I’m all right. I didn’t get badly injured, just my arm. It got shot, but don’t be disturbed, I will get better soon in the hospital…
It was real chaos! After we attacked Poland, which was the official start of the war, Russia joined in, and helped us fight. But today, France and Britain declared war on us. I believe that if we really fight with all our might, we will come out of this war as the winners!

I must go now; I have to deliver this to the noon mail call. I hope to see you within the month, if things go smoothly. God forbid I never see you again, I want you to know I love you very much, and tell our children that I cared for them greatly!

Serves: 10 slices of fascism, cruelty, backstabbing and invasion.

Ingredients for an ineffective war:
1 body of Hitler
1 body of Stalin
1 body of Mussolini
1 failed League of Nations
1 useless Treaty of Versailles
1 German Aggression
1 Japanese Aggression
1 cup of walnuts
1 big bucket of fascism
1 Axis Power
1 Allie Power

Directions:
First, take a bowl and mix together Germany, Italy and Japan
And call it
Until the batter becomes hard and rough, and brutal.
Take the bucket of fascism
And pour it all over Germany and Italy.
Dig through the Germany batter
And take out Hitler,
And the Nazi Party.
Return the countries that have been invaded into a jar

Animal Farm Movie Critique

I think that the movie and the book of Animal farm have numerous amounts of similarities and differences. Firstly, the story line of the movie is more or less the same as the book, with minor changes.

However, the book and the movie had many differences. For example, in the movie Old Major dies during his speech, whereas in the book, he dies afterward. Also, in the book, during Napoleon's reign, only the pigs got education. But, in the movie, all the animals got educated with Napoleon. Adding to that, the seven commandments were different than the ones in the movie. Finally, in the book, Squealer is described as a pig that is persuasive and has a twitch in his tail. In the movie, Squealer has no twitch. There are many more events like thins. As you can see, the movie and the book of animal farm are similar and different in their own ways.

I think I most represent Boxer from Animal Farm. To start with, I am like Boxer on page 56 in Animal Farm. "Even Boxer, who seldom asked questions, was puzzled." I feel I am also like this because Boxer is well aware of what is happening, but not able to say anything about it, because he doesn't want to get executed. Also, I am similar to Boxer, because when I am given a task, especially when there is a ruler on top of you, I always try to support authority, because I don't want to get punished. In conclusion, I feel I am very similar to Boxer.

Tyranny, Injustice, Self-Determination

Tyranny- the rule of someone else, like a bad government.
Injustice - the rights of someone else being violated by a person of authority.
Self-Determination - Motivating yourself to do something.

Tyranny, injustice, and self-determination are used in the book, Animal Farm. Self-determination is used by Old Major, because he's the one who told everyone that the humans are bad, and he motivated everyone to go against them. Tyranny is also there when Old Major was saying his speech about how the humans take things away from the animals that aren't his, and that he is not meant to have, for example milk and eggs. Injustice, because the animals have the right to live, and do what they want, not to live under someone, and live your life working for them. As you can see,
tyranny, injustice, and self-determination are all in the book.

UK Military

I believe that men or women should be allowed to join in the military in the UK if they choose to.
In the UK, you must be "16-33 years of age (officers 17-28) for voluntary military service (with parental consent under 18.)" In the UK, joining the military is 100% optional. I think this is a good thing, because a man could want or not want to be part of the military for various reasons, but if he does want to be part, the option is availabe for him. For example: a man might want to be part of the military becuase his country is in danger, he has no job, or would just like to serve his country.
Another reason is that women serve in military services, but are excluded from ground combat positions and some naval postings. This is also a nice hting to have, because it shows that women are no less than men, and if they would like, they can also join the military and make their country proud!
Lastly, you must be citizen of the UK, Commonwealth, or Republic of Ireland to be part of the military. This is also good, because if you are going to be part of the UK military, you should have some connection to the UK.
Personally, I wouldn't go to the military no matter what. I feel that the UK is a big, stong nation, and they can handle a war. Instead, I would like to finish my education, go to college, and then get a job. Also, I feel that people who go into the army are farther away from their family. For example: the family would be worried if their child if still alive.

Great Powers Game Reflection

The main visual elements in this picture are the different countries/regions that are shaking hands, or holding something together, and the main group in the middle. Also, some countries have more hands out reaching out to others.
The issue in the cartoon is about forming alliances.
The cartoonist's opinion on this picture is that countries are allies with other ones. And if you are not an alliance with anybody, you end up crying on the side, with no money. The evidence in the cartoon supports my opinion on how the cartoonist felt because Germany and Austria are in the middle, and look very successful because they are allies with people, and the woman on the side has nothing, and isn't an ally with anyone.
Maybe the artist could have shown more clearly what they are holding, and maybe shown some people who have back stabbed their allies, and shown is they are successful or not.
This relates to the Great Powers game, many people were allies with other countries, and 2 countries did manage to become broke because their "allies" declared war on them.

1. Which country were you? How did it feel to build your empire? Which countries had the advantage at the start of the game? Why? How did you empire compare to other empires?

Sami and I were The United Kingdom. In the beginning, it felt good to build our empire because we were quite strong. The UK, US, and some other countries had an advantage at the start of the gae, because we had more industries to start off with. Our empire was stronger than most or empires in the beginning, however, later on, we became very weak.

2. In the long run was it more important to buy armies, navies, industries or colonies? Why?

I think that buying industries was most important at first, once you have a decent number of them, spend them all on armies.

3. What did you do well? What would you have done differently?

We did a good job on spending our industries for the right things. Next time, I would not have become allies with so many countries.

4. How successful were your alliances? Did they help or hurt you? Could they be trusted?

In the beginning, they were helpful, in terms of helping us and supporting us in war. later on, though, we had too many, and a couple of them back-stabbed us.

5. What are three specific things you learned about conflict from this simulation?

I learnt that you can't rally trust anybody, or listen to anybody either.

Q3 goals and Evaluation of Q2 goals

In second quarter my goals were:

Really understand Imperialism, I can do this by taking good notes and asking questions.
To improve my study skills, by using the study guide.
Do my homework the day it is assigned.

I feel that I did take good notes in quarter 2, and I used them to study for the test and quizzes. I need to ask more questions when I don't understand, though. Finally, I did reach my third goal, and by doing homework when it is assigned, it never accumulates.

The natives in Southern Africa were The Afrikaners and the Boers, and the Zulus. The British and the Dutch and other Europeans came after the Portuguese. The physical geography in Southern Africa is varies greatly. When traveling in Southern Africa you would come across rivers, deserts and dry climates, pans, velds, plateaus and escarpments. In Southern Africa there is a river called the Okavango River. Did you know that this river's water never reaches the ocean? Instead, it make a nice home for crocodiles, zebras, lions, leopards, elephants, baboons and antelopes. Even though Southern Africa has rivers, it has a lot of dry land too. Region - Physical: The River Thames is right there in from of it.

I think the quote, “Violence leads to more violence,” means when you kill or hurt someone it will just lead to more fighting. You can never just fight someone and expect it to be over. Someone will get back at you and make you pay for your bad deeds. For example: 3:2:250-280 after Brutus and the other conspirators kill him, Mark Antony says an oration that makes the throng want to get revenge on the conspirators with Mark Antony. So, again, Brutus ans Cassius did a bad deed, and now Mark Antony and the city will make him pay!

Leadership

I think a leader is someone who is trustworthy, experienced, open to new ideas, approachable, nice, and knowledgeable about the topic. I think some leaders in our Humanities class are: Jonathan, Jemima, Casey, Lilly, and Sami, because whenever we have Socratic Seminars, they are the ones who always lead and direct the group to new ideas. Also, I think Shri is a leader, because when we mass produced "Chubby Bear" in quarter 1, she was telling everyone what to do! I think leaders are very important because we need someone to start the group off, and for the shy people, that don't like to talk very much, they leaders can alsways ask for their opinion. That's what I think a leader is.

Imperialism

In South East Asia, they earned money by setting up plantation farms. In India, they has many natural resources. Which is similar to the Middle East, and Africa, where they had raw materials. In India they conquered (glory), which is similar to Africa, where they gained colonies. The methods for South East Asia were violence, which is different than Africa, where it was technology. In India it was economically, militarily, and culturally, which is kind of similar to politically and economically in the Middle East. In all four places, the changes are all different. In South East Asia, farmers got poorer, there was lots of fighting, it was European run, and there were many economical changes. In India, there was new religion, people were starving to death, and there was no Indian government, and power lines. In the Middle East, there was leadership changes. In Africa, Europe controlled most.

Quarter 2 Goals and evaluation of Quarter 1 Goals

In first quarter, my goals were:

To expand my knowledge about geography, where countries are located.
To expand my vocabulary.

I think that I haven't really met my first goal because I haven't been working on geography as much as I wanted to.
I think I have met my second goal, because I now read for 30 minutes every night, and look up words I do not know.

Capitalism Cartoon

The main visual elements in this picture are the boss (wearing the "Capitalism" band,) the worker (wearing the "Labor" band, the money that is on the floor and falling from the worker as the boss shakes him.

The issue about this cartoon is maybe that the worker doesn't believe in Capitalism, and the boss found out, or the worker was stealing, or the boss is just greedy, and thinks he was giving the worker too much money, and wants it back.

I think the cartoonist who made this picture wanted it to illustrate how mean and selfish the managers are and how they don't give the workers the money they deserve.

I think this because the size of the laborer and the manager is very different, and because of the money.

Maybe the cartoonist could include the working conditions by having the work station in the background.

My Goals

My goals that I set at the beginning of the year were to expand my knowledge about geography. Specifically, countries and where they are located. Secondly, my goal was to expand my vocabulary by reading 15 minutes each night.

I think that I have to still work on my geography. I can do that my constantly looking at the map, and doing "Weekly Geography" in Humanities.

I think I am reaching my second goal. I am reading 15 minutes a night. Also, I will continue to do the vocabulary in Humanities.

Stock Game

You Must Sell Money To Make Money:

Yesterday in Humanities, our class played a game called the stock game. Unfortunately, I made the least money:( I think the mistake I made was that I was too careful about spending my money. If I had taken the risks, and been an entrepreneur, I would have probably been more successful.

The Effects on the Industrial Revolution

The Industrial Revolution has many positive and negative effects.

Positive Effects:

· During the Industrial Revolution many new inventions were invented, which we have today.

· It increased the living standards for people.

· In New England the machines were water powered which is good because they don’t need to produce the water, it’s natural.

· The commodity made things cheaper.

Negative Effects:

· Many people died because they could not support their family.

· Women had to work in factories, but they were not paid, because they were paid as a family with the husband.

· Children had to work because they were smaller, weren’t paid, and easily beaten.

Comparing Factory Game

On the twenty-first of August our Humanities class did and activity called the factory game. We had to pretend we were peasants in the 1700's. It was our younger sisiter/brother's birthday, and we had to come up with something to give them, with very limited supplies. I found this activity very fun and not at all pressuring . On the next day, we did an activity along the same lines, called factory game 2. Now, once we had chosen a favorite gift, Mr Coyle told us that now we had become a factory. Our mission was to make as many of those bears as we possibly could in 45 minutes. I have never before experienced such a crazy, overwhelming, pressurizing task. We weren't allowed to talk, take our time, relax OR EVEN BREATHE! We divided ourselves into groups of people who cut, glue, and color. I preferred the Factory Game 1 by far!

Factory Game

In Humanities class today we did a factory activity. We had to imagine we were peasants and it was our younger siblings' birthday, and we had to make something for him or her out of cut our pieces of paper. I am planning to make a box for my younger sister, so that she can piut her belongings in it. I think this wasa good activity because it taught me that peasants really have no money to buy anything, and everything must be made by hand.

My Rollercoaster Experience

My favorite rollercoaster is in Euro Disney. It's called Crush's Coaster. I remember so clearly the first time I went on it. I wasn't scared because the rollercoaster was based on Finding Nemo, because Crush is a turle in that movie, and Nemo is an animated children's movie. Me, my brother and my parents hopped into a a shell shaped car. I knew it would be fast though, because there was a height limit. My brother just made it. The coaster stared, slow and steady, into a dark tunnel. I couldn't see a thing. Suddenly, we drop down and down, thinking wenever stop. Our shell crashes down and speeds away. We ride slow now, looking around. There's a gigantic shark staring at us, named Bruce. We slowly enter a room full of jellyfish hanging from the ceiling. Their tenticles almost long enough to swipe over our heads... and ZOOOOOM.We jet into a big room full of nemo characters and twirl around, and then drop again. Now we're backwards, having no idea what's coming towards us. We climb up a big escalator, hoping that this is our last fall. By now, I am having so much fun, but I'm a little scared about how this is going to end... I look ahead trying to figure out where the path leads. But it's pitch dark. Now my brother is holding onto my waist feeling scared. I take a deep breath as we slowly come to a stop at the top of the escalator. 1, 2, 3, WHOOSH! We fall down. My stomach keeps going flip-flop flip-flop. We come to an abrupt stop. It's over. I thoroughly enjoyed that rollercoaster, because of the decorations and the thrill!

Necessity is the Mother of Invention

I think the quote "Necessity is the Mother of Invention," means that whatever you want to create, needs the right supplies. If you have the right materials, then they will give birth to the invention. I think people invent things because they want their life to be easier. For example, people could have sent messages to one and other by horses, but then somebody invented the telephone, because they wanted sending messages to be easier.

I learn best by visually seeing and doing things. After that I think I am a kinesthetic learner. I like to see how to do something, and once I think I know it, I want to try it out to see if I got it right. Mr Coyle can help me learn most effectively in the classroom by explaining something different ways in case I don't understand.

My Gang

At my old school, ASL, I had a gang. My gang consisted of Maddie, Sydney, Claire, and Jillian. I had a lot of friends, but these ones were the ones I was closest to.

Maddie was my best friend. I liked her because she was funny, crazy, nice, and easy to talk to. We shared a lot of hobbies and interests.

Sydney and I were really really close. We had loads of classes together and always shared laughs. She was funny, too and was always caring.

Claire was a perfectionist. She was very into her grades and school. But when she get hyper and crazy, there was no stopping her! She was very supportive and kind.

Jillian was so much fun! She was always in a kooky and wacky mood! It was always fun being around her!
